1000 copies were made but at least 400 were destroyed.
Chiswick decided to print 1000 copies that had sleeves that were printed on silver foil board. About 400 were used for promotion or handed out as prices in different competitions and the 600 remaining were available to the public. The problem with the silver cover was that the adhesive that was used to glue the sleeve together did not bond securely with the foil surface and therefore a lot of copies were returned and junked (Carroll 2001). That is probably why you sometimes see that only 600 copies were made. Ted Carroll thinks that only about 500 have survived. In an article by Alan Burridge in Record Collector he says that the silver foil sleeve turned out to be too expensive, which suggests that the initial plan was to use the silver cover for all copies. According to Record Collector´s Price Guide this silver sleeve in mint condition has an estimated value of GBP 60, but in March 2003 a copy was sold for GBP 180 on Ebay and a few months later another copy was sold for GBP 105. In January 2004 a copy was sold for a staggering GBP 310!
A strange thing is that the typo on the black and white version for Keepers on the Road actually has a correct spelling on the silver sleeve. Vibrator however is still Viborator.
On the http://www.acerecords.co.uk Ted Carroll says that 100 copies of the silver sleeve were returned to him at the time because of the bad glue. "I did have a few of these stashed away, but they were destroyed in a fire about four years ago", he writes on the site, probably in 2007. So the fire was in 2003.
